A Mexican Style Mortared Stone Wall

An interesting style in stone work we have seen traveling around Mexico is inserting small stones in the mortar joints. We have noticed this in both Patzcuaro, Michoacan and Alamos, Sonora. Above is a wall in Patzcuaro designed and built by Hernan Pimentel who I mentioned in the post on Adobe Brick Making in Patzcuaro.

This is the chimney and house where the first photo is taken.

These next three photos were taken in the very old, very small town of La Aduana near Alamos. These two walls are all that remain of possibly old haciendas.

I would think that originally this technique was used to protect the soft clay and/or lime mortars from rain.

An old molina or mill in Alamos.

These last two are from the Hacienda de los Santos Resort and Spa. We did not stay here.
